Chris standing's workshop was fabulous!

Picture

A small group of members and visitors enjoyed hearing about making hot compost last month. We had cleared out one of the bins so that Chris could start from scratch to build a properly working compost heap.
  1. Keep the heap moist at all times, especially in summer.
  2. A ratio of 30% green material and 70% brown is needed for the compost to work properly.
  3. Green material can be food scraps (no meat or dairy), lawn clippings, coffee grounds, eggshells, manure.
  4. Brown material can be leaves, straw, hay, small wood chips, mulch, paper, card.
  5. Manure helps to heat up the compost.
  6. 64 degrees is ideal. (We now have a thermometer to measure this).
  7. Water the heap as you add material to it.
  8. Turn it over regularly.
Chris also ran a workshop for the Department of Justice men’s group as they will assist in getting the compost to work effectively.
*Members- don’t forget you can add food scraps to either the compost or the worm farms and then reap the benefits by adding compost or worm wee to your garden plots. We also need newspaper and cardboard. This may be left on the table near the pizza oven.
Please take note of signs near the compost bins and follow directions so that the compost can work effectively.

Annual general meeting

REtractable hoses

Just a reminder that the AGM will be held at 11am on the last Saturday of July (27th) in the clubroom, followed by a shared lunch at 12.
This is a great opportunity for members to get involved and to have your say in running the community garden. We need general committee members and office bearers. Nomination forms have been emailed to you.
The committee has approved the purchase of several more retractable hoses so that all of the plots are covered.

fees

Fees are now due. The treasurer has set up an automated system of invoices. Please remember to include your name and invoice number when paying online.

winter planting

Seed, sow and plant in July: artichoke, asparagus, beetroot, broad beans, carrots, Chinese cabbage, spinach, lettuce, onion. parsnip, peas, potato, silverbeet, spring onion.
Keep warm everyone! We hope to see as many people as possible at the AGM and our shared lunch following the meeting. Don’t forget the clubroom is very toasty now that we have our wood heater.

Happy gardening,
Sandra Freeman
