In 2005 members of the Mornington Shire and Southern Peninsula Health officially opened the Rosebud Community Garden. A Committee of Management had been formed and volunteers started to plan the design for the garden. Native plants and trees were initially planted around the perimeter fencing, with the garden plots in the middle. Over the next few years native plants were replaced as they overgrew their areas and fruit-producing trees replaced them. The garden has developed primarily into a fruit and vegetable space.
Over the years the number of plots has grown to 51, many of them raised beds. Financial assistance from the Mornington Peninsula Shire, local businesses, service clubs, plus the Committee of Management’s own fundraising activities have ensured the garden’s success in creating a positive place for community members to learn, share and grow!
The garden has a large meeting room (The Shed), with an undercover verandah, a tool shed (a Lioness contribution), a kids cubby house, a pizza oven and BBQ. There are 50 plots for rent by members, a developing food forest, multiple communal garden beds, worm farms, chooks, a composting area, greenhouse, 2 water tanks, 9 taps with hoses attached for easy access watering (and automated watering in the greenhouse and main communal garden). The garden also has a bee hive that is tended by a couple of our members.
